Fans of Intermittent Fasting say Consuming Fewer Calories by Skipping Meals Helps Lose Weight and Leads to Other Health Benefits as well!
Matthew Lees (ML) and Eric Williamson (EW), both of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education, studied the effects of intermittent fasting on lean muscle mass in the general population and older adults. (ML), a postdoctoral researcher, and (EW) a Ph.D. student and registered dietician, conducted the research with Associate Professor Daniel Moore (DM).
“Finding ways to lose weight that are as simple as skipping a meal is very difficult because many people find it hard to manage their hunger while being in caloric deficit,” (EW) says: “But, if they find that their hunger is well managed with intermittent fasting and they have a resistance training regime to add into the mix, then it can be an effective tool for losing body fat.”
(EW): Research indicates that if you are going to practice intermittent fasting, you should combine it with exercise—in particular resistance training exercise.
Put simply, when people practice intermittent fasting without resistance training exercises they do lose weight however most of that weight is loss of lean muscle mass! If however they follow a resistance training exercise plan the loss of lean muscle mass shifts to a loss of body fat!
EW: The effects of resistance training exercises are so potent you can preserve lean muscle mass whilst practicing intermittent fasting!
