Want to tone and define your legs while building strength for daily life? The single-leg reverse lunge is one of my favourite exercises for bringing strength, balance and control together.
Strength with a purpose
Training your legs is about more than how they look. It’s also about developing the strength and control to move confidently through daily life.
The reverse lunge challenges you to step back, lower your body and return to standing while keeping your movement controlled. Working one side at a time also gives you an opportunity to notice differences between your legs.
Two cues to watch
In this short demonstration, focus on:
• Lower with control.
• Your front leg does the work.
Watch how these cues connect the lowering phase with the return to standing. The aim is a deliberate movement you can repeat consistently.
Make it work for you
The version shown uses a barbell, but your starting point should suit your current ability. Your balance, movement control and training experience help determine the right exercise variation and load.
For visible leg definition, strength training forms part of the broader picture alongside nutrition, overall activity and consistency.
