There’s a great feeling that comes with achieving something you once couldn’t do. Your first bodyweight dip—or a stronger, more controlled set—can be one of those moments.
Getting there starts with a level of assistance that lets you practise the movement with control. As your strength develops, that assistance can gradually decrease.
Watch the guzzFit video below to see the progression from band-assisted dips to bodyweight dips.
Why work on your dips?
Dips develop chest, shoulder and triceps strength for pushing and supporting your body weight.
But the achievement can mean more than another repetition. It can give you confidence in your ability to learn, improve and work towards something that initially felt out of reach.
If you already do bodyweight dips, there’s still progress to make through greater control and more consistent repetitions.
Start with the help you need
The video opens with a bodyweight dip, then returns to the most assisted version to show a starting point.
A resistance band provides support during the movement. With a suitable band and setup, you can practise repetitions at a manageable difficulty.
Assistance is part of the training. Each controlled repetition gives you an opportunity to develop the strength and skill needed for your next step.
Reduce assistance as you get stronger
The video shows progressively thinner bands before returning to a bodyweight dip.
These changes represent progress over time. There’s no deadline for moving to the next band, and the goal is to maintain control as the exercise becomes more demanding.
The right starting point and progression depend on your current strength, movement ability and goals. Dips should also feel comfortable for your shoulders; another exercise may be a better starting point if they don’t.
Feel great about what you achieve
You don’t have to wait for your first unassisted dip to recognise progress.
A smoother repetition, better control or less assistance can all be meaningful achievements. Together, those steps can help you feel stronger, more capable and proud of what your body can do.
